Entrees for Elephants: Hay for a Day

This gift will feed one elephant hay for a day!

Elephants consume several hundred pounds of vegetation daily. 15-20 hours of an elephant’s day is spent feeding. Adult elephants can eat between 200-600 lbs of food per day. Although at Sanctuary, they have acres to roam, graze, and forage, they still need supplemental feeding. Because of a lifetime of inappropriate diet, and the age of most of our elephants, supplemental feeding of hay is required to maintain their body weight and provide a readily digestible source of energy. Each elephant will eat approximately 2 bales of hay a day, although they are almost always sharing. This is an average, with the amount of hay fed in the dry season increasing and the amount decreasing during the rainy season.

Ongoing need.

You may direct your gift to one of our sanctuary elephants by making a note of their name in the Order Notes during checkout.  Thank you!
